Gulf Park Estates Reef - Back Bay of Biloxi, Mississippi 09-20-08 06:00 AM ( about 6 hours )
With stiff easterly winds I decided to run the Ocean Springs beach in search of specks and reds. However, no signs of fish occured with muddly looking conditions, so we ended up at the Gulf Park Estates Reef.
Started out with standard bottom rigs, and the bite on white trout was rather slow. However, by switching to poppong corks with 5-feet of 30-pound-test Seaguar fluorocarbon leader, and then finished off with a size 4 4X Strong Gamakatsu treble hook the action changed dramatically.
Baiting up with a fresh dead squid head or strip of cut croakerd the bite became fast and furious. My regular comeback client John Noel of Jackson, MS was reeling in fish one after another. A fish on ever cast, and watching those brightly colored Old Bayside Popper X-Treme popping corks take the plunge was a lot of fun.
Just by suspending the bait off the bottom in the dirty water conditions was the ticket to success. When the smoke cleared John had 130 of the tasty bottom dwellers in the box, and as a bonus picked up 3 small black drum in the Back Bay of Biloxi on the way back to the D'Iberville Marina.
John drove back with me to my home where I cleaned all the fish, and he ended up with a 5-gallon bucket three-quarters full of the tasty boneless fillets ready for the frying pan. His wife picked him up, and they were back on their way to Jackson with plenty of fresh fish for the dinner table.
A few weeks ago John and his buddy Jimmy Childress fished with me, and they boated 155 white trout and ground mullet, as well as 4 big specks at the Katrina Reef. Pictured is John and Jimmy's catch made a few weeks ago, a lot of filleted fish. Fishing is still good in south Mississippi, and will remain good well into November.
By that time the inshore waters will be holding more and more fish. Hey, there is always something to catch year round in our southern waters, so step aboard TEAM BRODIE CHARTERS for some fish catching fun.
